GRAPHIC DESIGN I • CLIPPING MASK & SAVING YOUR FILES
Exercise Focus for the week of September 19th
CREATE A NEW PAGE IN ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR • SAVE THIS FILE ON YOUR 562 NUMBER • AND ON YOUR FLASH DRIVE • PRINT OUT 1 FOR YOUR HARD COPY FOLDER
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE IT SET UP IN INCHES NOT POINTS • SIZE: LETTER (8.5 X 11)
1. Go to the Internet and search for images for your zodiac sign using any search engine. If your religious beliefs do not allow for a zodiac sign, the please choose a religious sign of your choice. www.deviantart.com is a good place to start. Try to find simple signs that are mostly just black and white shapes/symbols. Nothing illustrated or complicated.
2. Find a picture you want and right mouse click on it and “Copy” Paste the picture in Illustrator
(right click> paste)
BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER - COPY ALL THE DIRECTIONS FROM THIS POINT DOWN INTO YOUR ILLUSTRATOR PAGE.
After you have "Copied" the directions, go back to your work space, choose the Text Tool (T), draw a rectangle along the right side of your work space,
and then Paste (Control "V") the directions into that Text Box. This is how you can easily reference the next step in this exercise.
It's exactly how I work on actual projects: When a client sends me corrections or additions,
I copy the material from their e mail right onto the page in a Text Box . . .
3. Draw any shape on top of the image (no fill) using one of the shape tools in the toolbox 4. Hold the SHIFT key down and using the Selection Tool, click on both your image and the shape you drew
5. With both selected (you can see all the square "handlebars"), click on Object> Clipping Mask> Make
Make sure you remember that the handlebars are simply the anchor points at every corner.
6. If you have captured the part of the image that looks best, now apply a filter
(Example: Effect> Distort> Roughen, click on smooth button, OK)
7. Choose the Rectangle tool in the Shapes Tools. Position the Cross hairs on the Upper left corner of your page and Click.
A box appears: Fill it in as follows: WIDTH: 8.5 • HEIGHT: 11 and click OKAY
If the rectangle covers your zodiac image, select the rectangle with the Selection Tool, Click on Object> Arrange> Send to Back.
If you have trouble with this, make sure that you have the rectangle selected when you follow the steps I just mentioned.
8. Save as: LastName-ClippingMask to your 562 Number & your Flash Drive
Part 2 – Create Outlines
9. Click on the Text tool (the default type tool) and type the name of your zodiac sign at the bottom of the page below your image.
10. Change the type size to at least 30 pt and change the font to one with some heft or weight, a BOLD Font
11. Turn your text into outlines by clicking on Type> Create Outlines
(Hint: Use Selection Tool to make sure text is selected or the option to create outlines will be inaccessible)
12. Save the file again

13. Now, Type your name at the top of the page above your image
