ELEMENTS OF DESIGN: The Shapes Project
INTRODUCTION
The Shapes Project is the ultimate challenge of your creativity: the aim of this project is to give each artist the chance to show his abilities to create a stunning piece with limited means. The contributing artists each get the exact same set of 8 shapes, the Elements. With these shapes they are challenged to create their own unique design, within the limitations provided in the Rule book. Designers are thus challenged to create a unique piece within a strict set of rules. It all comes down to pure skills and creativity.
Besides it being an ultimate test of skills, we also think the Vormator project is something new and fresh. Imagine what can spawn from these simple rules. Many people will be interested to see what different designers will do with the Elements under the imposed restrictions. Imagine what happens when well-established designers contribute their graphics: will their pieces still be strong and recognizable, being stripped down to their essence? Who will find the most creative solution? We aim to establish an international collaboration of artists where the contrast between the art and the means has been maximized: each artist starts with the same set of forms but will have to end with a different, individual piece.
Note: As you work, think about how many of the Elements of Art / Design you are using.
It's not just SHAPES . . . you are using ALL of the Elements of Design! Think about and Identify them as you go along.
THE RULE BOOK - To be followed EXACTLY as written. Read Carefully!
What exactly are you allowed to do and isn’t allowed with the Elements?
The following rules have to be followed when creating your artwork:
1. you’re allowed to rotate, flip and duplicate the Shapes
2. you are not obliged to use all the Shapes
3. scaling is allowed, but only proportionally - HOLD SHIFT / 5-Part Sequence - no skewing or free transform.
4. you can add, subtract, intersect and group elements as you see fit
5. the use of color is unrestricted, you can create your own color schemes
6. you are allowed to use gradients
7. the Shapes may only be filled, the use of strokes is not allowed
8. you are not allowed to use filters or effects (e.g. drop shadows)
With these limitations in place each artist will face the same challenge. The rules will be applied strictly.
The most important thing to bear in mind is that you are free to do as you see fit,
as long as a viewer of the artwork is able to see that it is composed out of the Elements.
SPECIFICATIONS:
PAGE SIZE: 11 x 17 Horizontal or Vertical
Live Art Area 10 x 16

A Word from Babkie . . .
I have the Book that goes with this Project, you may look at it to get some inspiration.
My recommendation is to plan your Design first. Take your time.
Think about creating a Mandala from the Shapes.
That is an easy way to get this project done, stay focused, relaxed and positive.
Mandalas inspire peace within.
Something we can all use a little more of during all the testing we're going through.
ENJOY!
