Steve, here's another project for you to do
The WPA, Graphic Design & Our Nation's History • A Comparison to Today's Environment
Welcome to the second project of our AICE Studies.
Review the following areas of Study for Selections of Posters that were commissioned during the WPA era of the 1930's and 40's.
Below are 7 Categories which were the focus of the posters. Choose 1 category and make it your course of study for the next 3 - 4 weeks.
There are 7 categories that the WPA was interested in making the public aware of at that time in our history.
Choose one category for yourself, click on that category and it will take you directly to that part of the archives.
There you will find a number of posters, please read the history about the poster.
There will be information about the artists of the posters. You will . . .
1) Write a page about the Poster (25 Points) • 11 / 1 - 11/8
2) If there is information available, a page about the artist (25 Points) • 11 / 8 - 11 / 15
3) Note the font that is used in the Posters, please write a page about the font(s) (25 Points) • 11 / 26 - 12 / 3
4) Write a page about what your Category:
For example: Health & Safety: what were the Health & Safety concerns of the day? (25 Points) • 12 / 3 - 12 / 10
There are a total of 4 pages of study on the Posters of the WPA.
You will provide this Pages as Word Documents (Hard Copy)
As you study your category, please make notes (citations) on where you found your information.
You will probably find the most (and the best) information in the Library of Congress Archives.
If you do find other sources, please link all of your resources, including the Library of Congress.
Please also include a picture of the Poster or Posters that you choose as your Cover for your "Report".
And one more thing . . . see below the categories . . .
|1| Health and Safety
|2| Cultural Programs
|3| Travel and Tourism
|4| Educational Programs
|5| Community Activities
|6| Federal Project Number One
|7| World War II
And here's the Fun Part! Create your own WPA Style Poster of your own Subject.
If you need a Topic, I will give you one. Think in terms of Community Service, Museums, Libraries, Theaters / Cinemas, Travel, Travel Destinations and other Ideas that we can discuss. I hope you will enjoy this project. I love the WPA Style Posters. The Calendar in the front of the room has great examples of WPA Posters. This poster should be created in Illustrator. You may need to start with a photograph as your visual for the poster. You will work on this Poster throughout the next month. The Poster is worth 100 Points and is due on December 10.
The Specifications are as follows:
Poster Design Size: 18 x 24 • Created in Illustrator: Vector Art • No Bleed Please: Margins! Margins! Margins!
You must also include Sketches / Rough Layouts in your Graph Paper Note Pad as a Sketch book for this project.
You will need to have at least 6 Thumbnail Sketches of your Poster with various Directions you will explore.
I will provide you with guidance and Books to look through for reference.
You will work on this Poster during Class and at home if you have the program.
If you are confused or need more information or if you want to send me your Papers, you can e mail me.
You're doing a great job, keep it up - Your Friend, Ms Babkie.
